what is the weight of full and empty propane tank for a barbecue grill?

BBQ tanks hold 20 lbs of propane. The tank, when empty, is 18 lbs, given or take 8 oz. That means that a full tank will weigh 38 lbs. If you weigh your tank and it only has 1 or 2 lbs in it, it may not work.

  3. Propane weighs almost exactly 4lbs. per gallon. A standard grill size tank holds 5 gallons completely full. Law only allows tanks to be filled to 80% capacity so a fresh filled 5 gal. or 20lb tank will have 16lb or 4 gallons of propane. Tank weight varies by tank age and manufacturer, older tanks are much heavier, but 16 to 20 lbs empty weight is the norm.
