What kind of barbecue grill is better……Propane or Coal?

I like coal, but I don’t grill out that much, it gives a nice flavor to whatever you’re grilling and they cost less that getting a propane range…

But if you grill constantly and don’t care about the smokey taste of charcoal, propane might be better for you since the coal grill takes about 20 min to get going.

  3. since purist barbecue folk LOVE the scent of naturally-smoked food. go with coal. if you’re more into convenience, go propane.

  4. It’s not really a matter of which one is better, it’s more of a personal choice. What’s your taste? If you like the smoky flavor that charcoal imparts to food, then go with a charcoal grill, if not, go with a propane. I have both because sometimes I want the charcoal flavor, sometimes I dont. It depends on what I’m making.

  7. They both do a great job, it really just depends on your needs…I have both actually..If I have the time, I prefer to cook on the "coal" grill, as the flavor to me seems much better….
If I am in a hurry, or just don’t want to wait, I’ll through my food on the propane….
    Personal preference…..

  10. I have to say that both are good. Propane is much easier to work with. I have a Weber. But then coal gives you that BBQ taste you’re looking for. If you have the money, I’d get both for those days when you can’t decide if you want convenience or more flavor.

  12. I know alot of folks these days love the propane or gas grills because you dont have to fuss with charcoal and such but as for me I prefer the charcoal grill. to me a gas grill is just like cooking indoors and if I am going to do that I have a george forman grill. I like the taste I get from charcoal grills, I think it is cheaper to buy charcoal rather than those propane tanks, and because that is the kind of grill I grew up with. My favorite are the weber kettle type grills

  13. i have both, the charcoal i use if i’m not being rushed and dont need to make a ton of food for everyone at a party. the propane i use for the complete opposite. but for taste, charcoal wins because it controls the flavor of your meat better.

  15. It depends on what you prefer. Me myself like Coal. It gives you that hickory bar B Que flavor as opposed to just throwing it on the propane grill that’s like just getting it cooked no flavor except for spices that you put on it.

  16. You have to like ashes with charcoal – - as soon as a drip lands on a briquette ‘pshhhh’ ashes all over your food.
Then, in a good propane unit you can keep a pan of wood off to the side to add some smoke flavor and clean food.
Also no waiting, wads of newspaper or lighter fluid, fancy words for more chemical’s
Caveman or clean and modern, quick.
