Can I use just barbeque wood to grill instead of Charcoal, or do I need charcoal as well?

The wood chips they sell in stores are for smoking food. They can be used but will burn up very quickly. If you have some dry oak or other hardwood, you could use it instead of charcoal.
The problem with wood is that it burns with a flame for so long until it burns down to coal. So you can use wood, just have to watch the food .
