When using a gas grill is it necessary to turn the propane tank knob all the way open?

The propane tank on my gas grill has a knob that says "Open" and "Close" but do I have to turn the knob all the way to the "Open" setting or will having it turned just halfway save gas?

For consistent results, turn the gas all the way to the Open position. The regulator and temperature settings will then allow you to grill with the most control.

Many grill manufacturers recommend starting a gas grill on high for about 10 minutes to get the grilling surface searing hot, then reduce the settings to medium for grilling.

Many recipes for things like steak, boneless chicken breast, pork chops and burgers recommend grilling over a direct-medium fire (350°F to 375°F) on a covered grill. Grilling with the lid down helps to give consistent results and reduce flare-ups.

For grilling times we use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com. Enter the details of the things you will be grilling like cuts of meat, thickness and the doneness you want. It will give you instructions for how to grill steaks, pork chops, burgers and the like just the way you want them. It also has grilling tips.

It’s also recommended to let steaks stand at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling and to let them rest for 5 minutes after grilling to keep them nice and juicy.

  1. i would imagine it would save gas, but you can turn that down on the grill as well. so if you don;t turn your tank on all the way the setting on the grill may change as well, so you may end up with undercooked food. its best to turn it on all the way and regulate gas flow with the grill knobs.

  3. no, the gas is regulated by the knob on the grill itself open is open on the tank

  4. No, it is not necessary to turn it to all the way open. There is a regulator between there and the burner control knobs, that will only let so much pressure build up anyway. I myself always open it fully, but just out of habit. It isn’t bad for it either way.

  5. You will not save gas by opening it half way. It will flow at the same rate. the knobs of the grill would regulate it. but that means less heat

  6. Nope, it will throw off the dial settings (high, med and low) on your grill.

  7. Yes you should open the valve all the way with just a little bit of pressure to back seat the valve. The reason that you should do this is the seal on the valve stem is an o-ring and after the the tank has some age on it the o-ring becomes loose and doesn’t seal as well,it will leak a small amount.By back seating it you will make a positive seal.Almost all propane valves leak when not fully open.I used to fill install and work on propane tanks
