Question about small propane tank for small outdoor grill?
I didn’t completely turn off my canister. Wnen I went out to check it, I could hear the hissing sound of the gas leaking. I immediately turned it completely off. The canister became extremely cold. Will the temperature get back to normal now that I completely turn it off. Or is there still a danger?
Thanks for all the great answers, unfortunately I can only pick one. You were all right though, it returned to normal temperature after about a half hour.
It was evidently open wide enough that the propane couldn’t vaporise fast enough. When that happens, it will cause the bottle to get very cold at the liquid level and even ice up. It is similar to when you put a bottle on a high BTU rated fish/turkey cooker. When you have that puppy wide open, those bottles will ice up. As soon as you turn it down or off, the liquid in the tank will vaporise until it fills the vapor space in the tank back up and everything will return to normal.
It will be fine.

It’s common to have frost develop around a compressed canister that has decompressed at a high rate.
When compressed gas is let loose it absorbs a lot of heat, which makes the tank feel cold. Check for the leak. If it’s on the tank valve get it repaired or a new one. Otherwise check the grill, it’s probably a faulty regulator (controls gas release).
Don’t worry it’s NORMAL, just wait an hour or so for it to warm to surrounding temps.
If it’s a small green propane cylinder, let the remaining gas out and toss it. They arent designed for multiple uses.
